Amit Shah Convenes Critical Meeting on Manipur as Violence Intensifies

NEW DELHI, March 1, 2025
– Union Home Minister Amit Shah is chairing a high-level security meeting today at North Block to address the deteriorating situation in Manipur, where ethnic violence has seen a troubling resurgence in recent weeks.

The emergency consultation, convened at the Ministry of Home Affairs headquarters, brings together key security and administrative officials amid growing concerns over the northeastern state's law and order situation.

Top Officials Gather as Tensions Escalate

The crucial meeting has drawn a roster of senior officials including Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla, Intelligence Bureau Director Tapan Deka, the Manipur Chief Secretary, along with top brass from state police and central security forces.

Sources indicate the discussions will center on three primary objectives: restoring stability in violence-affected areas, implementing preventive measures against further clashes, and developing sustainable solutions to address the deep-rooted ethnic tensions between the Meitei and Kuki communities.

Nearly Two Years of Unrest

Manipur has been in the grip of ethnic conflict since May 2023, when violence erupted following demands by the majority Meitei community for Scheduled Tribe status. The protracted crisis has claimed over 220 lives and forced thousands from their homes.

Recent weeks have witnessed a concerning uptick in violence, with arson attacks targeting both Meitei and Kuki households. Fresh outbreaks of violence in Jiribam district have particularly alarmed security agencies, prompting immediate containment measures.

## Emergency Measures Already Implemented

In response to the escalating situation, authorities have imposed curfews across several districts and deployed additional central security forces to volatile areas. Today's high-level meeting is expected to assess the effectiveness of current security strategies and strengthen coordination between central and state government efforts.

A senior Home Ministry official, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated, "The situation requires immediate and decisive action. The Home Minister is personally monitoring developments and today's meeting aims to formulate a comprehensive response to restore peace in the region."

The outcomes of this critical meeting and subsequent developments in Manipur will be closely watched as the government attempts to resolve one of India's most challenging internal security crises in recent years.

This is a developing story. Further updates will follow as more information becomes available.
