Lakhnow UP - Authorities in Uttar Pradesh carried out the demolition of Madni Masjid in Hata Nagar on Sunday, February 9, amid heavy security presence including BSF forces and local police led by DSP Kasya Kundan Singh.
The demolition follows a months-long legal dispute over land encroachment that began on December 19, 2024, when local officials conducted a property survey of the mosque. The investigation revealed that while the Muslim community had purchased a 32-decimal plot 15 years ago, the mosque's construction extended beyond its legal boundaries, occupying 4 decimals of Nagar Palika land and 1 decimal of public land.
Following the survey, district administration officials issued notices to mosque representatives requesting documentation and maps to verify the construction's legitimacy. Despite a 15-day deadline to produce the required papers, mosque officials failed to comply with the authorities' demands.
The mosque, which served as a prominent Islamic teaching center and zonal office of the Tablighi Jamaat in eastern UP for over two decades, was demolished after the High Court stay order expired. Local authorities maintained that all legal procedures were followed before proceeding with the demolition.
This incident follows a similar case in December 2024, when authorities in Uttar Pradesh's Fatehpur district partially demolished the historic 180-year-old Noori Masjid. Officials cited road-widening requirements for State Highway-13 as the reason for demolishing the rear portion of the mosque, which had stood since 1839.
The demolitions have drawn attention to the ongoing issues of land encroachment and urban development in Uttar Pradesh, particularly concerning religious structures. Local authorities continue to emphasize their commitment to following legal procedures in such cases.
