Fire at UP Medical College Claims Lives of Newborns, Investigation Ordered

Lakhnow
- A devastating fire at the Maharani Laxmi Bai Medical College in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh has resulted in multiple casualties among newborn infants, with 16 children currently receiving treatment for injuries at local hospitals.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jhansi Sudha Singh confirmed early this morning that medical teams are working intensively to save the injured children, with all available doctors and medical facilities deployed for their care.

Initial reports suggest potential safety lapses at the facility, with sources indicating that fire alarms may have malfunctioned due to inadequate maintenance of emergency systems. However, Mr. Pathak, who oversees the health portfolio, noted that a fire safety audit was conducted in February, followed by a mock drill in June. "On how and why it happened, we can say something about it once the probe report comes," he stated.

The incident has prompted a three-pronged investigation, including separate inquiries by the health department, police, and a magisterial investigation. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has ordered senior officials and doctors to conduct rescue operations on a war footing and has announced compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the victims' families, with Rs 50,000 for those seriously injured.

The Divisional Commissioner and Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Jhansi have been directed to submit a report within 12 hours of the incident.

National Leadership Responds

The tragedy has drawn attention from the highest levels of government. President Droupadi Murmu expressed her grief, calling the news "extremely heartbreaking" and offering prayers for the bereaved families. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced additional compensation of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund for the victims' families and Rs 50,000 for the injured.

"My deepest condolences to those who have lost their innocent children in this," the Prime Minister stated, adding that local administration is working closely with the state government on relief and rescue efforts.

Opposition Demands Accountability

The incident has sparked political controversy, with opposition leaders including Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav alleging negligence by the hospital administration and demanding action against those responsible.

The hospital's administration has been directed to cooperate fully with all investigations as authorities work to determine the cause of the tragedy and prevent future incidents.
