New Dehli - Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched a scathing attack on the Congress party and the Gandhi family, accusing them of undermining the Constitution through amendments over multiple generations.

In an interview, PM Modi claimed four generations of the Gandhi family "tinkered with" and "destroyed" the Constitution at different times during their tenures. He alleged that Jawaharlal Nehru brought the first amendment to curb free speech, Indira Gandhi overturned court verdicts through amendments, Rajiv Gandhi changed the Constitution to overturn the Shah Bano case verdict, and Rahul Gandhi tore apart a cabinet ordinance publicly in 2013.

"The question that should be asked is - who was the first to play with the Constitution? Pandit Nehru did. He brought the first amendment which was meant to restrict freedom of speech," Modi told India Today. "Then his daughter (Indira) overturned the court verdict by bringing an amendment. Then her son (Rajiv) came and overturned Shah Bano's verdict. He changed the Constitution."

The Prime Minister also criticized Rahul Gandhi over the 2013 incident when he tore an ordinance brought by the Manmohan Singh government, alleging the Gandhi family was "running the government from remote control" at the time.

Modi vowed not to allow the Opposition to change the Constitution's fundamentals, stating, "I won't allow reservation based on religion, you already partitioned a country on the basis of religion."

The Opposition has accused the BJP of planning to amend the Constitution if it wins 400+ Lok Sabha seats. However, the Congress has denied this and claimed the BJP wants to snatch away reservations from SC, ST and OBC communities to give to minorities.

Rahul Gandhi recently warned that if the BJP tries to change the Constitution after winning the elections through alleged malpractices, "the whole country will be on fire."
