Mumbai, February 4, 2024: Mumbai-based Islamic scholar Mufti Salman Azhari was detained by Gujarat Police on Sunday in connection with an alleged hate speech delivered in Junagadh, Gujarat. The action has sparked protests from his supporters who gathered outside the Ghatkopar police station where he is currently held.

Azhari's controversial speech, delivered on January 31st, went viral on social media, prompting the filing of an FIR against him and two local organizers under sections 153B (promoting enmity between religious groups) and 505(2) (making statements conducive to public mischief) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Earlier today, posts on Azhari's social media handle claimed he was "detained based on a false allegation" by a joint team of Gujarat ATS, Mumbai ATS, and Chirag Nagar police. The post further accused the police of withholding information and failing to issue a formal arrest notice.

The detained organizers, Mohammad Yousuf Malek and Azim Habib Odedara, were previously arrested by the Gujarat Police. Azhari's detention, however, has triggered protests from his supporters who demand his immediate release.

The situation remains tense, with heavy police presence deployed to manage the gathering outside the station. While Azhari awaits further action, the incident highlights the ongoing concerns surrounding hate speech and its potential to incite social unrest.
