Renowned Classical Singer Ustad Rashid Khan Passes Away at 55

Kolkata, Jan 9, 2024: Renowned Hindustani classical vocalist Ustad Rashid Khan, a towering figure in Indian music, passed away this afternoon at a Kolkata hospital following a long illness. He was 55.

A Legacy of Melody: Born into the illustrious Rampur-Sahaswan Gharana, Khan was the great-grandson of its founder, Ustad Inayat Hussain Khan. He inherited his family's rich musical tradition and carved his own niche with his unparalleled vocal prowess and deep emotional expression. His renditions of Khayal, Thumri, and other genres enthralled audiences worldwide, earning him accolades and appreciation for his mastery of the art form.

Battling Illness: Khan had been battling prostate cancer for some time. His health deteriorated further after suffering a cerebral attack last month. Despite receiving treatment at a specialized Kolkata hospital, he succumbed to his illness at approximately 3:45 pm today.

Outpouring of Grief: The news of Khan's demise sent shockwaves through the Indian music fraternity and beyond. Prominent singers like Rekha Bhardwaj and Sonu Nigam took to social media to express their condolences and celebrate his contribution to Indian music. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited the hospital to offer her personal condolences and declared that Khan would be accorded a state funeral with full honors.

Last Rites and Remembrances: Khan's body will be kept at a mortuary today. On Wednesday, it will be taken to Rabindra Sadan, a cultural centre in Kolkata, where fans and admirers can pay their last respects. His last rites will be performed later that day.

A Loss for the World: Ustad Rashid Khan's passing marks a significant loss for Indian classical music. His legacy lives on through his vast body of recordings, countless disciples, and the indelible mark he made on the hearts of music lovers across generations.
