Tensions flare as calls for boycott gain momentum following comments deemed insensitive and disparaging.

New Delhi- A tweet by Maldivian politician Zahid Rameez belittling India's Lakshadweep Islands in response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit has sparked a social media storm, leading to calls for boycotting Maldivian tourism. The hashtag #BoycottMaldives quickly trended online, accompanied by outrage over Rameez's statement: "The move [promoting Lakshadweep] is great. However, the idea of competing with us is delusional. How can they provide the service we offer?"

Rameez's insensitive remarks, and similar comments from Maldivian minister Mariyam Shiuna (since deleted), ignited a sharp backlash across Indian social media platforms. Celebrities like Akshay Kumar and Sachin Tendulkar joined the chorus, urging Indians to explore domestic destinations like Lakshadweep instead of the Maldives.

Adding fuel to the fire, the Maldivian government's perceived pro-China stance under President Mohamed Muizzu also drew criticism. This sentiment, coupled with the insensitive remarks, fueled the boycott movement. Many saw it as a way to promote Indian tourism while expressing disapproval of the Maldivian politicians' conduct.

However, the Maldivian government quickly moved to contain the damage. It distanced itself from the inflammatory statements, suspended three ministers involved, and emphasized the need for responsible freedom of expression without harming international relations.

The incident highlights the sensitivity surrounding tourism and national pride. While the boycott call's long-term impact remains to be seen, it undoubtedly serves as a wake-up call for both parties to prioritize respectful dialogue and understanding.
