Mumbai- In a groundbreaking development, senior IPS officer Rashmi Shukla has been named the new Director General of Police (DGP) for Maharashtra. The official announcement came from the state home department on January 4, solidifying her position as a trailblazer in the history of law enforcement in the state.

A Historic Appointment

Shukla, a distinguished Indian Police Service (IPS) officer belonging to the 1988 batch, had previously served as the director general of the Sashastra Seema Bal on deputation. Her wealth of experience and expertise in the field has earned her widespread recognition.

Transition from Mumbai Police Commissioner

Prior to Shukla's appointment, Mumbai Police Commissioner Vivek Phansalkar had been holding additional charge as the DGP of Maharashtra. This interim arrangement followed the retirement of the previous DGP, Rajnish Seth, on December 31.

Overcoming Legal Challenges

The decision to appoint Shukla to the esteemed position comes after a significant legal hurdle. The Bombay High Court recently quashed two phone-tapping cases that had been registered against the accomplished IPS officer. This ruling cleared the path for her to assume the role of the top cop in the state.

Shukla's appointment marks a milestone for gender representation in law enforcement leadership, breaking barriers and setting a precedent for the future. As the first woman DGP of Maharashtra, she is poised to make substantial contributions to the state's security and law enforcement landscape.
