The Supreme Court is set to hear the plea of two women who were sexually assaulted and paraded by a mob in Manipur today. The incident, which occurred on May 4, came to light after a video of the heinous act went viral on social media.
New Dehli: (Tamsil Shahezad Khan) The court has given the Centre and Manipur government an ultimatum to ensure justice for the victims or allow the court to intervene.
Centre's Strong Stand against the Crime
The Home Ministry has termed the crime "too heinous" in its affidavit and emphasized the need for justice to be served in a manner that deters such atrocities across the nation. Seven men have already been arrested and are in police custody. The Centre has also requested the court to transfer the case to another State to ensure a time-bound and efficient trial.
Rehabilitative Measures for Victims
The government has assured rehabilitative measures for the victims, including expert medical care, anonymity, security, legal aid, avenues for education and livelihood assistance. The Centre has also directed the police to report such incidents promptly to the Director General of Police to prevent their recurrence.
Reward for Informants
The Ministry has announced rewards for informants and whistleblowers who provide information leading to the arrest of absconding culprits involved in such crimes.
Supreme Court's Deep Concern
Chief Justice of India, D.Y. Chandrachud, expressed deep concern over the incident and summoned top law officers to convey the court's resolve to take action if justice is not served promptly. The court considers the incident a gross violation of human rights and has emphasized the need for justice to prevail.
