New Delhi: In a recent update provided to the Supreme Court, the Manipur government revealed the grim toll of violence that has plagued the state in the past two months. The Chief Secretary, Vineet Joshi, reported that a staggering 142 individuals have lost their lives as a result of the unrest. Additionally, a staggering 5,000 incidents of arson have been recorded since May, with Imphal East and Imphal West districts witnessing the highest number of fatalities.

To address the escalating situation, the government has taken several measures to restore order and safeguard public safety. A total of 5,995 FIRs have been filed, leading to the apprehension of 6,745 individuals. Notably, six cases have been transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for further investigation.

Recognizing the gravity of the situation, the state government has deployed a significant presence of security forces. Currently, 124 companies of paramilitary forces and 184 Army columns are actively working to maintain peace in Manipur. In addition, daily reviews of security deployments are being conducted, and a standard operating procedure (SOP) has been established to effectively address any emergent situations.

Efforts to restore normalcy and support those affected by the violence are also underway. The government is actively working on connecting students residing in relief camps with nearby schools. Moreover, competitive exams have been conducted to ensure minimal disruption to educational activities. However, the state government faces the challenge of a two-month-long suspension of internet connectivity, which it is now considering conditionally relaxing on a case-by-case basis.

Recognizing the sensitivity of the situation, the state government has requested petitioners to refrain from naming tribes during arguments, as this could potentially exacerbate tensions on the ground.

These developments come in response to the Supreme Court's directive to provide an updated report on the steps taken to curb violence and rehabilitate those affected. As Manipur continues to grapple with the aftermath of the unrest, the government remains focused on restoring peace and normalcy in the state.
